In 2004, the universe briefly exploded because I played an MMO that I actually enjoyed: City of Heroes (this was before I played World of Warcraft, but I digress). It had the usual problems, namely repetition and a sense that you weren’t making any real impact on the world. Despite this, it had a refreshingly unique concept, surprisingly entertaining combat, and an immensely deep character creation system that let you detail your own hero or villain to a tee.
NCSoft may have decided the time is right for a proper sequel to their opus, thus the trademark filed for City of Heroes 2 with the US Patent and Trademark Office. Trademarks can seem pretty vague, but given the patent is for use with “computer game software” it doesn’t leave much to the imagination.
This is a bold move on the part of NCSoft should they choose to pursue it, given that the third and arguably the most significant expansion pack for World of Warcraft, Cataclysm, is set to hit store shelves sometime during 2010. Only time will tell if this latest challenger will pose a threat to Blizzard’s near-dominance of the MMO market.

I always wanted to play the first City of Heroes but just never got around to it. If I had to pick I’d choose Superheroes over Fantasy stuff like WoW any day though.
